Does anyone seriously use this technique any more? If it’s not clear what the title means here’s an explanation. Code exists in a version control system which lets you manage code and effectively keeps a history of all the changes made to the code. Sometimes you might want to work on a feature that requires substantial modification to the existing code base, and in order not to accidentally damage the working code, you create a branch from existing code and work in that branch. This branch is tracked by the version control system. The grand technique of branching using #ifdef obviates the version control systems branching capabilities, because it’s obviously useless at branching and it would be far far far superior and elegant to place code within a minefield of
#ifdef MY_FEATURE_1 ... #endif
blocks that ruin readability and don’t solve the branching problem. Below I list the problems with this failure of a technique:

Forgotten #ifdefs. People, including the grand architect, who use this technique inevitably make errors when applying it in practice resulting in broken builds.

It’s not the same as a branch. The #ifdef blocks are only placed around the new code written. If that code calls a function in a common file, no #ifdef block is placed around it, so changes someone else makes to that common function end up affecting the code that was written in the #ifdef block, negating the value of using the #ifdef block in the first place.

Makefiles. This doesn’t work in makefiles so files that have been added because of code required for MY_NEW_FEATURE are still built for every other feature.

Recently Richard Dawkins came to Australia for the Global Atheist Convention and was interviewed on Q&A amongst a panel of mostly politicians. The central theme of the New Testament came up. The premise of the New Testament is that God took on human form as Jesus to save humanity from Hell. Apparently humans are so bad that God/Jesus can’t stand them (oh wait didn’t he just come to earth to hang out with them? Never mind ….). Now to save a human means washing them of their sins, sins being those bad things you do. Typically the Jews of the time sacrificed an animal to do this. Jesus was going to change things by being the ulitmate ‘sacrifice’ and people wouldn’t have to bother with messy animal sacrifices. To do this he had to be nailed to a cross, die and then be resurrected. Now Dawkins called this ‘depraved’, which came across too strongly for the Christians on the panel and they wound up with their feelings hurt and started to cry saying that he didn’t respect their view.

Perhaps he could have done a better job explaining why the central premise of the New Testament is morally flawed. It’s flawed because it’s an example of vicarious redemption. In other words, it’s scapegoating. Instead of the guilty party being made to atone for their sins proportionally, a scapegoat is put in place so that the guilty party doesn’t need to do anything. This isn’t justice. This isn’t fair. Real life doesn’t work like this. Courts don’t send a proxy person to prison because of someone else’s crime. I could not call the court just if it placed someone else in prison for a crime I committed. I might be secretly grateful that someone else took the punishment for me, but I wouldn’t want to live in a country where courts are run like that, nor would I respect the court system that allowed such punishment. And it’s a similar case with the Christian God. I don’t respect a God that makes stupid decisions about punishment. The second point where the premise is flawed is to do with the ‘sacrifice’ theme. It’s not really a sacrifice if you’re going to live anyway.

The video of it is here:

I was reading this blog and it gives a reason for women telling little lies. Note that ‘lie’ in this context is used to refer to the little white lie that women tell to spare the other person’s feelings and not the lie she might tell on the ‘walk of shame’ back home at 8 am in the morning in her little black number, that looked good last night but now draws odd looks from the morning crowd heading to work. Here’s the quote that sums it up: “Susan Shapiro Barash, author of Little White Lies, Deep Dark Secrets: The Truth About Women and Deception, says that women lie unashamedly about everything from love to money to plastic surgery and she concurs with my theory: women do it to save the other person’s face.”

This is where I disagree on 2 counts. One, telling lies like this isn’t the prerogative of woman. Men can tell these lies because they to have empathetic faculties. And two, they don’t do it to save the other person’s face but to avoid the perceived confrontation that would happen if they told the truth. I’ve been guilty of this to, where I’d opt to tell a white lie or say nothing in order to not risk offence because in offending there is the risk of conflict and this is what women, or should I say, people who tell these white lies are trying to avoid. I’ll illustrate this with a typical example that people would be familiar with. A guy asks a girl out to a bar and she says ‘I’ve got to spend time with my parents on the weekend.’ and he replies incredulously ‘But you live with your parents? You see them during the week?’ to which she has no response and the conversation dies to nothing. It’s quite clear her first response was a fabrication to avoid telling the truth. Now put yourself in her shoes and feel what goes on her gut in the moment she decides to tell the lie. It all happens really quickly, much quicker than you will read these words. She panics, there’s a bit of a flutter maybe a tingle of goosebumps and a rush of blood to the face as she prepares to defuse an awkward moment. She doesn’t think much of this guy so she could say ‘I don’t like you enough’ but, even though that statement is the truth, is is a ‘face losing’ statement and therefore insulting to the recipient. People don’t like being insulted and may act aggressively to the insulter opening up the potential for a physical conflict which she would probably lose. Hence the urge to tell these sort of lies is inherently selfish, is related to self-preservation, and does not stem from an altruistic urge to ensure he retains his sense of self-worth. Note that, like I mentioned in the earlier in the paragraph, men are also capable of telling these sort of ‘face saving’ lies but probably do it less frequently partly because there is less of a need for them to avoid conflict.

Which leads to another point. In general is telling face saving lies worth it? In my experience I’ve generally regretted occasions when I’ve avoided telling the truth in order to not insult the other party. These occasions have nothing to do with the dating scene or interactions with the opposite sex basically because girls aren’t coming up to me and asking me out or offering blowjobs although I would love it if they did. Then I could use my understanding of truth and lies, anger and self-preservation and deliver solid truthful insulting one liners like ‘No, you’re fatter than a beached whale’. Instead these occasions are limited to times when I’ve silently acquiesced to a sub-standard meal at a restaurant or when someone has invited me over to their place and I don’t like them that much and would rather not be there, but because I don’t want to insult them, I’ve gone along and stayed for an awkward hour or two before leaving. In the end nobody is better off because of my silent lie. The restaurant still delivers the sub-standard meal to the next customer and some idiot thinks they’ve got a new friend.

I heard of Keysar Trad a while ago because he was speaking at the Sydney Opera House. He’s a prominent figure in the Australian Muslim community and seems to have taken to Islam like a duck to water. His behaviour matches the observation that when immigrants move to other countries their culture becomes more orthodox than those in the mother country. This counter-intuitive notion has been observed in other parts of the world, where an immigrant group has moved into a host country, and in preserving the traditions they knew from ‘back home’ end up preserving the more archaic ones. An unfortunate consequence of this is Keysar has turned into a fundamentalist Muslim, increased the population of Muslims in the world by spawning 9 offspring and is spouting nonsense such as this article here about polygamy being good for Australia, in the context of Islamic values being good for society, and therefore should not be a crime.

I could follow a pro-polygamous argument if its premise was not based on Islamic values but rather on some rational biological need. For example say the ratio of males to females was reduced to 1:20 (i.e. there is a shortage of males in the population group) by some cataclysmic event, like a male eradicating virus. In order to address this imbalance one could see the need for a polygamous arrangement. This arrangement would only work over the time frame of a few generations until the ratios had somewhat evened out. His article only addresses polygamy from the males perspective and relegates polygandry, where the wife has multiple spouses, as being un-Islamic. According to the article a polygamous marriage honours the old wife because it is a ‘spiritually rewarding experience that allows women to grow while the husband toils to provide for more than one partner.’ What women wouldn’t want to bestow that gift on her current husband by getting another husband?

According to the article, in a Western society where unions are monogamous, the only the other person in an affair is stigmatized. However, contrary to the article from what I know from living in a western society all my life, is that it’s typically both parties that are stigmatized and it’s the cheater, the person that is currently married, that endures the worst of the fallout. However continuing with the thread of reasoning presented in the article and assuming that its right in that the women is left a resourceless pregnant victim at the end of the affair, it leads on to congratulate Islam by saying that Islam recognizes this as part of human nature and allows for a polygamous marriage as a way of legalizing the affair and un-stigmatizing the women. However, Keysar fails to think, and doesn’t realize that you don’t need to legalize a polygamous arrangement in order to provide for the new mistake because in a Western society the daddy will be ordered to pay child support. In other words you can solve the problem of the women being left ‘resourceless’ without the need for some Islamic value injected into you.

In summary the argument is sexist because it does not allow for polyandry and presents a false dichotomy because it assumes that in affairs women are resourceless victims whose only way out would be through polygamy. It also stems from a fairy tale perpetuated by an epileptic paedophile warlord which renders it a load of nonsense.

A couple days ago I did a Linux from scratch build to see what it’s like to build a basic linux system and because I wanted to build a cross-compiler. However it wasn’t sufficiently ‘from scratch’ for my needs so I looked around and found crosstool which promised to automatically build me a compiler that would be independent of my host machine. I untarred the tarball and proceeded with:

./demo-x86_64.sh

This failed with the misleading error:

configure:7509: error: cannot compute sizeof (long double), 77
See `config.log’ for more details.

Inspecting config.log revealed that the failure was actually due to a missing file called crt1.o

configure:7491: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc -o conftest -O conftest.c >&5
/home/sashan/code/crosstool-0.43/build/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/gcc-4.1.0-glibc-2.3.6/gcc-core-prefix/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/3.3.6/../../../../x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/ld: crt1.o: No such file: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Oddly the build of demo-i686.sh worked so I guessed that maybe it doesn’t work if the host and target machines are the same?

To prove the hypothesis this I tried:

linux32 ./demo-x86_64.sh

and surprisingly it worked. The command linux32 makes program named afterwards believe that it’s running on a 32bit host.

I’ve been quite impressed by Brother’s support for linux printing. They have both rpm and deb packages available for all their printers. However I recently upgraded my system to Fedora 11 x86_64 and had to reinstall the printer drivers. Unfortunately there didn’t seem to be any but I did find this note on their website saying how to use the 32 bit drivers under a 64 bit system.

Most printers these days come with support for multicast DNS to enable them to be discovered on the LAN without having to know the ip address of the printer. However if you’re using Fedora you will probably notice that the printers on your LAN aren’t automatically discovered. For example if you go to System->Administration->Printing and click ‘New Printer’ the computer won’t discover them. This is probably because the firewall is blocking udp port 5353, which is used to listen for mDNS packets sent to the multicast address 224.0.0.251. So turning of the firewall will allow these packets through. Also if you install avahi-tools and do the following you should see your printer/s turn up in the list below.
